HSK 3.0: what changed

The new standard has been in force since July 2026. Here is what is different and what it means if you studied under the old one.

The short version

  • Nine levels instead of six.
  • They are grouped into three bands: beginner 1–3, intermediate 4–6, advanced 7–9.
  • The advanced band is one exam covering three levels at once.
  • The syllabus roughly doubled: 11,000 words across all levels.

If you studied under HSK 2.0

Nothing you learned is wasted — the old words are all still in the new syllabus. What you need is the part that was added.

The word lists on this site follow the classic HSK 2.0 syllabus, because that is what we have English meanings for. The complete HSK 3.0 lists exist on the Russian side of the site: 5,600 words of the advanced band, for instance.

Check the official sources

Numbers differ between publications, and the transition dates differ by country. Before you sign up for the exam, check the official HSK site and your test centre. This app helps you memorise words; it is not a source of exam rules.
