About Pandawed
Pandawed is a flashcard app for memorising words — Chinese ones above all. Here is what it is made of.
The card
A card has three fields: the term, the reading and the meaning — for Chinese that is characters, pinyin and a translation. The reading is optional.
Characters are coloured by tone: first red, second green, third blue, fourth purple, neutral grey. So the reading is remembered together with the character rather than as a separate task.
Sets and folders
A set is a stack of cards under one name — HSK 2, «Verbs of motion», «Lesson 5». You study a set at a time.
Sets go into folders, and inside a folder they can also be tagged. Search looks inside the cards too — by characters, pinyin and meaning.
Five ways to study
- Cards — flip and recall, with a «know / still learning» verdict.
- Review — only what is due today.
- Drill — pick the answer or type it.
- Writing — trace the character stroke by stroke.
- Matching — pair the word with its meaning against the clock.
Spaced repetition
Every word comes back on a schedule: after a day, three, a week, then less and less often. What you know stops taking your time; what is slipping away shows up again in time.
Dictionary and stroke order
A full Chinese dictionary of 3.4 million entries lives inside the app, so an unknown word opens in one press during a lesson — no internet needed. Stroke data for 9,574 characters is stored the same way.
The dictionary is Chinese→Russian. That is also why the HSK 3.0 word lists exist in Russian but not yet in English: there is nothing to build them from.
Ready-made sets are a hint, not the truth
The HSK sets and dictionary hints are there for a quick start. A meaning on a card is one short gloss out of several possible ones.
If you are preparing for the exam, check your own textbook and build your own cards. Your own set is doubly reliable: you answer for what is in it, and the word starts sticking while you type it.
